Artic Weather To Continue. Have You Got Your Rock Salt

After a cold night conditions will remain treacherous as temperatures struggle to get above freezing again today, bringing widespread ice and leading to warnings for motorists.

The freezing temperatures, fell to around -8C overnight for much of England. Most parts of the country will by dry and cold until the weekend when a more unsettled weather front will push its way in, but it will bring little respite from the big freeze, Met Office forecaster Charles Powell said.

He said: “Generally speaking we are expecting freezing temperatures to last at least until the weekend. Very low overnight temperatures will bring frost and ice so we can expect to see some winter hazards.

While daytime temperatures will hover at around zero for much of the country as darkness falls the mercury is expected to plunge to as low as -10C.

Rock Salt is often used both residentially and municipally for managing ice. Rock Salt is used to manage ice because brine which is a solution of water and salt has a lower freezing point than just ordinary water. Therefore by simply putting salt on ice this will cause it to melt. It is common for people to spread Rock Salt on their paths and driveways after a snow storm to melt the snow. It is also common for people to lay Rock Salt before a frost or snowstorm to prevent ice from forming.

Some people may be concerned about the effects of Rock Salt on the environment however do not worry! Rock Salt is non-toxic and residual salt is gradually diluted and disposed of through natural processes.
