Cold Snap On It’s Way
Gritters were out across Lancashire this weekend as snow fell.
Lancashire County Council had some of its 49 strong gritting team out at the weekend gritting roads across the county including the M65 from junction 10 to 14 as all lanes were covered in snow.
Nelson, Colne and Burnley saw snow fall in the early hours of Sunday morning and some of the higher parts of Blackburn and Darwen were also covered in sleet and snow.
The Met office has warned that the cold air spreading south this week will bring frost and temperatures as low as zero in some areas.
Drivers are warned to watch out for Black ice as water still flowing from fields and hills onto already frozen ground will make conditions very serious.
Paths and drive ways will also be affected by ice and you need to be prepared.
Here at Greengates Builders Merchants Accrington, Lancashire we stock Rock Salt in 25Kg bags and in bulk bags.
Rock Salt is often used both residentially and municipally for managing ice. Rock Salt is used to manage ice because brine which is a solution of water and salt has a lower freezing point than just ordinary water. Therefore by simply putting salt on ice this will cause it to melt. It is common for people to spread Rock Salt on their paths and driveways after a snow storm to melt the snow. It is also common for people to lay Rock Salt before a frost or snowstorm to prevent ice from forming.
Some people may be concerned about the effects of Rock Salt on the environment however do not worry! Rock Salt is non-toxic and residual salt is gradually diluted and disposed of through natural processes.
