DIY checks Around The Home

10 DIY checks to do this Easter Holiday

  1. Go around your whole house and check for loose or leaky gutters. Improper drainage can lead to all kinds of damp issues. Make sure downspouts drain away from your homes foundations and are clear of debris.
  2. Check for flaking, peeling or blistering paint outside your house. This is a sign that you need to consider repainting.
  3. Check for flaking, peeling or blistering paint on external doors – Remember, repainting a front door can do wonders for your homes curb appeal!
  4. Get a screwdriver and probe the wooden trim around windows, doors, railings and your wooden decks. It is important to make the repairs before the spring rains do too much damage to the exposed wood.
  5. If you have a pair of binoculars, examine roof tiles/shingles to see if any were damaged during the snow and ice. The summer sun can cause further damage to the roof so act quick. It is always advisable to have the flashing around plumbing vents, skylights and chimneys checked and repaired by a qualified roofer.
  6. Check paving and concrete slabs for signs of cracks or movement. It is important to ensure the pointing is kept in good nick as cavities easily form below the paving and can cause serious injury. When weather permits, pressure-wash and then seal the paving.
  7. Check the condition of your patio furniture – if it was left outside it might need a rub down and a good coat of wood stain and varnishing.
  8. Check outside taps and hose pipes for freeze damage.
  9. Check your lawn mower and other equipment to make sure it is ready for summer use. Clean equipment and sharpen where relevant – It will make life a lot easier when the sun does poke its head out.
  10. Check fences and sheds for any sign of rotting or deterioration. Acting quickly can save you a bundle.

“so just a few little jobs for you this Easter that could save you time and money in the long run” says Greengates Builders Merchants Accrington, Lancashire.
