Have You Got Your Rock Salt Yet?

A sharp twist in the jet stream is about to open the floodgate to bitter Arctic winds bringing freezing fog and widespread frosts.

Sleet and snow is forecast as far south as Wales and the Midlands by the weekend with wintry showers possible across the country.

Gritters were out in Cumbria yesterday as flurries of snow fell across the Pennines.

The chilly outlook comes as Britain reels in the aftermath of devastating Storm Imogen which struck on Monday.

Although the gales have died down Britain faces a new twist in the winter weather as bitter winds send thermometers plunging.

Experts say the jet stream, which has until now been positioned north steering storms in from the Atlantic is about to dive southwards.

There will be widespread frost on Thursday night into Friday morning with freezing fog over central and southern Britain.

The Met Office said a separate band of milder air arriving later this week will bring more widespread snowfall by the weekend.

Rock Salt is often used both residentially and municipally for managing ice. Rock Salt is used to manage ice because brine which is a solution of water and salt has a lower freezing point than just ordinary water. Therefore by simply putting salt on ice this will cause it to melt. It is common for people to spread Rock Salt on their paths and driveways after a snow storm to melt the snow. It is also common for people to lay Rock Salt before a frost or snowstorm to prevent ice from forming.
