Improvements To Accrington Town Centre

The 1960s building on Broadway was previously owned by Liverpool-based company Atmore Properties, but was acquired by Hyndburn council last week for an undisclosed fee.

Improvements to the town centre could be heralded by the council’s purchase this key building in the main shopping area.

It is currently used by seven businesses including Greggs, Nationwide, Broadway News, Jack Fulton, the British Heart Foundation and G2 Lifestyle with one unit unoccupied.

Deputy Council Leader Clare Pritchard said: “We have bought the building on Broadway and I think it is a positive thing for the town.

“The previous owners were interested in selling and we thought it would be a good thing to have control of the building and have it back in local ownership.

“We are going to keep the shops there and we want to strive to keep our town centre vibrant.”

Mike Danns, chief executive of Accrington-based East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, said: “We think Accrington town centre does need a combination of cherishing and development and it shows the council is prepared to take some leadership.

“By taking full control of the building the council is able to play its part in ensuring the town centre can be made as presentable as can be.

“In the long run the attractiveness to the town centre is what will attract traders and trade.”

The process to buy the building began earlier this year and Tory opposition leader Coun Peter Britcliffe hopes the purchase will be the ‘final piece in the jigsaw’ to completing improvements on Broadway.

He said: “It’s a very important acquisition in the town centre. It provides office space above some of the shops, which could be rented out or used for council purposes, but equally it has been a problem building on Broadway as it is still very much stuck in the 1960s.”

“This is fantastic news for the centre of Accrington, lets hope the improvements happen sooner rather than later” says Greengates Builders Merchants Accrington, Lancashire.
