For every customer who switches to electronic billing, Buildbase is going to sponsor the planting of 10 sapling trees in a dedicated area of SCA Timber’s FSC-certified forests in Sweden.
The ‘Buildbase Lifecycle Forest’ is going to be located in the Ljusåsen area of Sweden. Buildbase managing director Stephen Thompstone visited SCA’s Bogrundet tree nursery to see the first saplings ready for planting.
This is the first time SCA Timber Supply has dedicated part of its productive forests to a specific customer.
The saplings, which will be planted from this summer’s season onwards, will grow and absorb carbon until their maturity, and they will be harvested in 80-100 years’ time.
"Electronic billing saves cost and time as well as reducing waste," said Mr Thompstone. "We’re thanking our customers with the planting of these new trees, promoting a cycle of new growth.
“We’re also supporting our customers by making available certified timber from responsibly-managed forests, which is much in demand."
Buildbase actions on resource efficiency include establishing an 'environmental champion' at each branch, responsible for achieving the company’s targets in the construction industry campaign to halve waste to landfill by 2012.
SCA’s Swedish forests, slightly larger than Wales in total area, have been FSC-certified for over a decade.
The company’s tree nurseries produce over 80 million tree saplings each year. Its high-tech sawmills optimise the cutting of each log, producing 1.8 million m³ of wood products each year, with sawmill wood waste converted into biofuel.
Here at Greengates Builders Merchants Accrington, Lancashire we feel the idea of ‘a cycle of new growth’ is a very good idea which will benefit the environment. We therefore ask you to consider switching to electronic billing where possible in order to help save trees.
