Greengates Builders Merchants Warns; Keep Your Metal Safe!
The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has declared Wednesday November 11th National Metal Theft Day, following a rise in metal theft in the last three years.
The Home Office states that since 2007 metal theft has cost the UK approximately £360m.
As part of this day Safer Neighbourhood Teams in Warwickshire will visit local scrap yards in a bid to break this trend by discussing ways that metal can be secured from thieves and illegal scrap metal dealers.
National Metal Theft day follows on from Home Office National Metal Theft Crime Unit pilot, which ran from the 19th January to 31st March 2009. The aim of this pilot was to clamp down on rogue scrap metal dealers who illegally handle stolen metal and to ensure that scrap metal dealers are complying with existing legislation. The Metal Theft Crime Unit also worked with legitimate businesses to help reduce the opportunity for thieves to sell on stolen items and profit from their crime.
Police advise premises holding large amounts of scrap metal, aluminium, copper and cable, and buildings with large amounts of lead flashing on their roof, to be on the look out for thieves.
Superintendent Chris Ward or Warwickshire said: “We appreciate that it is difficult for premises to protect large amounts of metal from theft but by installing CCTV and carrying out basic crime prevention techniques, you can reduce the chance of becoming a victim of theft and protect yourself from loss and distress.
“Marking company owned metal with one of the marking products on the market will allow metal to be traced back to your business, whether recovered still in the possession of the thieves or at the point of disposal and make disposing of the metal more difficult.”
Greengates Builders Merchants, Lancashire encourages you to keep your metal safe and to be on the look out for metal thieves.
