Pub chain Wetherspoon has been named the nation’s top choice for the most important meal of the day.
Its lower fat sausages and poppy-seed toast has earned the accolade best Big Breakfast in the Men’s Health magazine Restaurant Awards 2014, beating a host of restaurant chains and food providers.
The £3.09 Wetherspoon breakfast was singled out for using lower salt and lower fat sausages, and breads with more fibre and less sugar than standard varieties.
Wetherspoon, said they use award-winning Lincolnshire sausages, 100 per cent Danish back bacon and bread made to a bespoke recipe which includes poppy seeds.
The best place to go on a date was found to be Pizza Express, with Prezzo highly commended.
Experts made their choice on protein quality, fat content, carbohydrate sources, salt, sugar, nutrient density and value for money.
Fast food chain Nando’s picked up the top award for best “muscle building” food, followed by Japanese restaurant Wagamama.
Subway won an award for offering lower calorie fast food which “doesn’t hamper fitness goals”.
Men’s Health editor Toby Wiseman said: “The best-laid healthy eating plans can be sabotaged by bad decisions when eating out, but Britain’s most popular restaurant chains actually offer a wealth of high-quality and tasty options.
