East Lancashire’s road bosses have revealed they have enough grit to last them through the cold snap- if it does not snow again!
However Keith Young, the man in charge of the county’s roads, has admitted that if it snows, Lancashire will be ‘in trouble.’
It comes as the Government said councils asking for more grit would be told to reduce usage by a quarter; possibly by leaving B roads and other minor routes untreated. Young said: ‘There are two scenarios here. One is that we go back for more supplies, in which case we would be beholden to the Government’s rules and we would only be allowed to grit A roads. On the other hand, if we maintain the grit levels we are at, we estimate we will be able to continue gritting Lancashire’s A roads and about half of B roads if the weather stays dry. However, if we get another blizzard then, like other authorities, we are in trouble.’
Young said he believed Lancashire was managing supplies better than other councils. Lancashire County Council has ordered an alternative to grit for badly-hit areas, which is due to arrive next week.
