Save The Great Harwood Tip

Greengates Builders Merchants Support Save The Tip In Great Harwood. This is somthing we feel very strongly about, we don't want an increase in fly-tipping in the area.

More than 1,000 protesters have backed a campaign to stop the closure of a Great Harwood tip.

And campaigners could even take to the streets in a protest rally to overturn the Lancashire County Council decision.

The Alan Ramsbottom Way tip is one of four sites out of 19 which have been recommended for the axe following a county-wide review.

Although Hyndburn has another site at Whinney Hill, Altham, many residents believe closing the Great Harwood site will lead to a massive increase in fly-tipping.

John Duckworth, of Bostons Street, said: “Great Harwood is a town that is getting better with the new Morrisons and new Tesco, so why take something away and have it deteriorate again?

“We are already having a fly-tipping problem and closing the tip will make it worse.

“We are trying to improve the town, not make it worse.”

Mr Duckworth, 65, said sending users to Whinney Hill will lead to more problems at an already congested site.

He said: “Whinney Hill is already incredibly busy. If people have to wait too long they won’t bother using it and fly-tip instead.”

Noordid Aziz, of Glebe Street said: “The tip is always busy. Whenever you visit there are 10 cars there at least. To close it would be a great loss to the community.”

Ward councillor Ciaran Wells has drafted a letter to the council about the closure, which has been signed by more than 1,000 residents.

He said a petition against the closure has nearly the same number of signatures.

Coun Wells added: “It is a fantastically well-used centre.

“It is a real asset to Great Harwood and the surrounding areas, and to lose it would be a huge loss to the community.”

He said a rally against the closure is being planned for later this month.

Residents can read the full recommendations for the tip at www.lancashire.gov.uk and have until September 30 to respond to the consultation.

Make sure you pay a visit to the Great Harwood tip and sign the petition to help save the tip.  The area has already lost one tip at Langho we don’t want to loss another says Greengates Builders Merchants Accrington Lancashire.
