Stone Cladding Chosen by Major Retailers

Two high-end stores are both set to use stone cladding in large-scale refurbishment projects, transforming the city space around them. Both John Lewis and Next have proposed designs featuring the attractive and versatile natural stone cladding system and work will soon begin.

The Old Beechwood Shopping Centre in Cheltenham has been taken over by John Lewis and there is great excitement for the arrival of the retailer on the high street. Plans have been submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council that show the entire front elevation of the old shopping centre is to be demolished, before a full rebuild will take place.

The front of the shopping centre currently comprises a bay window and gable roofs, with a column-flanked entrance. Once demolished, it will be replaced by a large-scale rectangular structure which is divided into five distinct bays by stone-clad columns in a traditional honey colour of Cotswold stone. John Lewis hope to open the new store in 2017 and facilities will include a state-of-the-art gymnasium plus lots of extra shopping space.

Leading retailer Next were next to announce their plans - a £14m investment at Gloucester's Peel Centre and the opening of a flagship store. The company wish to lease a building three storeys high that overlooks the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, from where they will sell a wide range of clothing as well as furniture.

As part of Next’s ‘new- look dual-format’ stores, the company is keen to ensure the new building is extremely attractive to visitors and residents of the town - stone cladding is a natural choice to achieve this and will be complemented by glass cladding and a welcoming atrium area with a balcony. A spokesperson for Next said that the company want to open the store ‘as soon as possible’ and that it would have a ‘real wow factor’.

Natural stone cladding continues to increase in popularity across a massive range of applications, immediately improving the aesthetic value of whatever surface it is applied to.
