Decorative Aggregates: Perfectly Practical
'Decorative aggregate' is an umbrella term that covers a selection of stone materials, including pebbles, slate, gravel and shingle. As well as providing a versatile landscaping material that can enhance the visual aesthetic of your garden or outdoor space, different aggregates have different practical properties.
Here at Greengate's, your local builders merchant, we stock a wide variety of decorative aggregates, sold in both domestic and trade quantities. Your choice of aggregate can be delivered direct to your door, with regular delivery slots available. Here we look at some of the qualities of these useful materials.
With a smooth, rounded shape created by the natural action of moving water, pebbles look particularly attractive as part of a garden water feature. They also have many other uses, such as in rockeries, to enhance the appearance of vegetation and to delineate a space. When used in conjunction with landscape fabrics, also available from Greengate's, pebbles help to suppress weed growth.
With a range of colours available, slate pieces are ideal for decorating borders, whether they are around a path, a pond or a patio. It can assist in areas of poor drainage though us not well suited for driveways: its brittle nature can not stand up to the stress of traffic.
Gravel & Shingle
The perfect path and driveway material, these decorative aggregates are sturdy and cost-effective. Both gravel and shingle display excellent drainage properties: a continually waterlogged garden can be quickly remedied with the easy installation of a French Drain using either gravel or shingle.
