Here we present a brief step-by-step guide to creating a stunning garden path using decorative stone aggregates from Greengate's, your local builders merchant.

  • Choosing Materials. To achieve professional results, you need to choose materials of impeccable quality. Greengate's supply a superlative collection of decorative stone aggregates and edging, all of which are available at the most competitive price.
  • Marking Out. There are lots of ways to do this but by far the quickest, easiest and most effective is to use a line marker. Greengate's is a proud supplier of a 30m chalk line marking tool, designed and manufactured by leading brand Stanley.
  • Creating an Edging Trench. Carefully dig out an edging trench: the depth will vary according to soil type, upstand and edging height required. Compact the base using a rake.
  • Laying Foundations. At the base of the trench, add approximately a 10cm depth of concrete. Smooth with a trowel and re-check levels.
  • Bedding In. After the concrete is fully set, install string lines to guide the path's edges. Use an even layer of mortar to bed in edging stones. When finished, use a protective plastic sheet in case of rain.
  • Supporting Edging. Once the mortar has set, secure the edging with additional concrete. Create a slope leading away from the path using a trowel: this important step will improve drainage.
  • Clearing Debris. Remove all soil, turf, vegetation and other debris, up to a depth of 15cm. Failure to complete this step will result in the final path surface being uneven.
  • Compacting Soil. This can be achieved with a rake on smaller paths. Larger paths may require the use of a garden roller or vibrating plate.
  • Adding Landscaping Fabric. Geotextile weed suppressant fabric, available from Greengate's, is designed to prevent the growth of weeds while still permitting air and water to permeate freely.
  • Adding Decorative Stone Aggregates. Distribute the aggregate along the full length of the path to an overall depth of 3-5cm. Use a rake to spread the aggregate evenly.

That's it! Your new path is ready to enjoy.
