Artificial Plant Walls: All the Advantages with None of the Drawbacks!

There are numerous ways to beautify the outside of a property but one that continues to grow rapidly in popularity is the installation of a green wall. Essentially, this involves covering the outer elevations of a property with green plants and it is far from being a new idea: the Aztec civilisation appears to have been the first to develop the concept, planting vines that grew to cover the walls of their palaces and temples.

Though using real plants to cover walls has many advantages, it also comes with significant drawbacks. They require a lot of maintenance and, as the plants are very close to one another, they are especially vulnerable to the spread of pests and diseases. In addition, the plants (not to mention the water they contain) are extremely heavy and so can cause structural issues, particularly on weak and/or older buildings.

The first artificial green walls were created and developed in the 1990s and were primarily used to decorate buildings in the commercial sector, such as hotels and offices. Their numerous benefits soon saw them being used more and more often in domestic settings as well. These benefits include:

  • Improved Mental Health. A plethora of studies have repeatedly proved that being exposed to nature delivers significant improvements in mental health by elevating mood and reducing stress. The fact that artificial green walls are not made with real plants does not change these beneficial effects.
  • Low Maintenance. Once installed, artificial green walls require almost no maintenance, unlike real plants which require watering and pruning.
  • Durability. Artificial plant walls are made using strong, robust materials that will last for many years. They will never suffer from the effects of disease or attack by pests and can also stand up to even the most extreme weather.
  • Sustainability. As they do not require any water or pesticides, artificial plants are actually a more environmentally-friendly option that real plants.
  • Versatility. The artificial plant wall panels can be cut to any shape and size and so offer great flexibility, able to be exactly customised to fit any space.

Here at Greengates Builders Merchant Accrington, we proudly supply artificial plant wall panels from the leading Everwall brand. Each panel measures one square metre and there are three attractive styles to choose from.
