Drainage Channels: Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Drainage Channels: Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Springtime in the UK is always a rainy time but if you think that it's been wetter than usual then you're certainly not wrong! Data released by the Met Office shows that the UK has experienced a record amount of rainfall in the past 18 months and especially during March.

During the 18-month period from October of 2022 to March this year, the average amount of rainfall across the country reached nearly 1,696mm, the highest level for this time period since records began over 180 years ago in 1836. The level is significantly higher than the previous record, set only the month before. During March 2024 alone, over 445mm of rain soaked the country, a figure representing a 29% increase over the long-term average.

The sharp rise in rainfall is attributed to climate change. 2023 was the hottest year recorded across the globe and was the second-hottest here in the UK. Warmer air can hold more moisture and thus causes increased levels of rain. The super-wet conditions resulted in all sorts of problems, leaving fields waterlogged and affecting crops as well as causing flooding to numerous homes and businesses all over the country.

When it comes to protecting buildings from the devastating effects of flooding, it is absolutely crucial that a reliable, well-maintained drainage system is in place. Here at Greengates Builders Merchant Accrington, we supply a wide variety of products to facilitate such drainage.

Polychannels are designed as a permanent way to channel potentially-damaging run-off water to an appropriate drainage system for disposal away from a property. Available in one-metre lengths from the comprehensive Greengates product portfolio, the robust channels are crafted from polypropylene, a recycled material that is ultra-strong despite being of an extremely light weight. Perfect for use in an array of different areas from driveways to paths and patios, the polychannels are fitted with a grate to ensure that they do not become clogged with leaves or any other debris that may interfere with their performance.

In comparison with other surface-water drainage systems, polychannels are super-fast and easy to install. Each channel is fitted with female/male sliding connections, the strength of which can be enhanced with the addition of a suitable sealant. The channels also boast snaplock and springlock functionality.

The superlative drainage channels are complemented by a collection of accessories which allow a unique system to be created that suits any space. This range of ancillaries includes 90° corner pieces, stopends and sump units with integral debris baskets.
