Floors: The Record Breakers!

When something is always there, we tend to take it completely for granted and don't give it a second thought. The sun, running water and the internet are just three examples, all of which we would find it incredibly difficult to live without. Another, seemingly rather mundane, example would be floors.

Always beneath our feet supporting our weight, the humble floor is something that should be appreciated, even if it's only for the time it takes you to read this edition of the Greengates Builders Merchants blog. We're going to take a look at some of the many times that floors have made it into the world record books...

Most Floors in a Building
At 163, the world record for the most floors in a single building is held by the Burj Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates. This is not the only title held by the imposing multi-use skyscraper: Burj Khalifa also holds the records for...

  • The world's tallest building at 829.8 metres
  • The world's highest elevator installation
  • The world's longest elevator-travel distance (504 metres)
  • The world's highest restaurant. Named 'At.Mosphere', the eatery is located on the 122nd floor at a height of 442 metres

World's Largest Marble-Tiled Floor
Located in the prestigious Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, the largest marble-tiled floor in the world boasts an area of 138,352 square metres, which is the equivalent of no less than 535 standard tennis courts! The individual tiles, which are rendered in refined tones of brown, cream and black, were shipped to the USA from Spain and Italy.

World's Largest LED Floor
The marble floor at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas offers a classically traditional aesthetic but the holder of this record is thoroughly contemporary. Installed at the sports hall of Schloss Stein School in Germany, the world's largest LED floor covers an area of 500 square metres. At the touch of a button, the floor can display marking lines for any sports game, meaning that there is no need for the confusing array of lines traditionally painted onto sports courts.

Most People Sweeping a Floor
Whatever its location, purpose and construction, every floor has something in common: it has to be cleaned! The holders of the records for sweeping floors have made a virtue out of this everyday chore. There are two records in this category:

  • Most People Simultaneously Sweeping a Floor at a Single Venue. This record-holding figure stands at 7,021 simultaneous sweepers. The participants were all from Dhaka in Bangladesh and represented a number of companies and organisations, including Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Gazi Tanks, XPERT Providers, Gazi TV, Dettol and the Dhaka South City Corporation.
  • Most People Simultaneously Sweeping Floors Across Multiple Venues. Organised with the very serious purpose of highlighting the importance of cleanliness, this record was collectively achieved by 10,180 individual sweepers at numerous venues in the Uttar Pradesh region of India.
