The Many Benefits of Home Insulation

The Many Benefits of Home Insulation

Autumn has well and truly arrived, bringing with it a significant and very noticeable drop in temperature. Winter will soon be here and so it's an ideal time to consider upgrading the insulation in your property. Good insulation brings with it a host of benefits, some of which we will be discussing in this edition of the Greengates Builders Merchant blog.

Indoor Temperature
The majority of heat loss from a home is through the walls: an estimated 35% of heat loss occurs in this way. 25% of the heat lost is through the roof with a further 10% lost through windows. Insulating a property's walls and loft therefore results in a much warmer, cosier and more comfortable ambient temperature indoors during periods of cold weather.

Energy Costs
The price of energy continues to spiral upwards, putting increased strain on households already suffering from the effects of the general cost-of-living crisis. If your home has inadequate insulation, your heating system will have to work that much harder and for longer periods of time, all the while consuming excessive amounts of expensive energy. The initial cost of purchasing and installing insulation is thus very quickly recouped, with the project resulting in massive savings on your energy bills.

Environmental Impact
Using energy is not only expensive but also has negative effects on the environment in the form of carbon emissions, which are widely accepted to be a key factor affecting climate change and global warming. As installing proper insulation results in a reduced need for energy usage to warm the home, there is a corresponding reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide emitted.

EPC Rating
Every property has its own unique Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating, which shows its energy efficiency and details the costs of heating that property. Installing insulation improves this energy efficiency and so results in a better EPC rating. This adds financial value to a property if you intend to sell it or rent it out in the future.

Condensation Control
Condensation is a leading cause of internal damp, which can result in structural issues that are costly and time-consuming to remedy. One of the most serious issues caused by condensation is the formation of mould, which can have lasting detrimental effects on human health. Home insulation helps to prevent the incidence of condensation, which is far more common during the autumn and winter months.
