Weedol 2's active ingredient is diquat, a chemical that was created in the UK back in 1955 and became commercially available soon after in 1961. It works by inhibiting a plant's ability to photosynthesise, thus preventing it from making food for itself and thus killing it.
Weedol 2 is only effective when used on green plants; it cannot penetrate brown bark and so it can be safely used around the bases of already-established shrubs, bushes and trees in a garden. The formula is inactivated from the moment it comes into contact with soil so that it is safe to sow seeds and place new plants once the application has fully dried.
One of the most common issues with using weedkiller is the need to get the formula's strength exactly right. With Weedol 2, this problem is immediately and decisively solved as the granulated formula is supplied in pre-measured sachets. The contents of one sachet are simply mixed with water according to the instructions; the mixed formula is then applied to problem areas using a watering can.
